Gianni Versace, an Italian fashion designer, founded the Versace fashion house in 1978 in Milan, Italy. Gianni, who was born in Reggio Calabria in 1946, began his career working with his mother, who was a seamstress. He moved to Milan in the 1970s and worked for various fashion houses before deciding to launch his own brand.

Versace's first collection in 1978 was a women's ready-to-wear line, which quickly gained attention for its innovative use of color, bold prints, and the combination of high fashion with an avant-garde edge.
